Glasgow Prestwick is the only airport in Scotland with its own railway station, a footbridge from the platforms into the terminal. Reaching it from Manchester means a change at Glasgow Central, seven services a weekday, the last leaving at 17:21. The road journey is 219.5 miles in one vehicle. This page counts the change and the waiting, and sets the two against each other door to door.
How long does it take to drive from Manchester to Prestwick Airport? Around 5 hours 10 minutes for 219.5 miles, and the gap between those two figures is the thing to notice. This is slower per mile than the Glasgow Airport run despite being a similar distance, because the last section down into Ayrshire is not motorway.
The route is the M6 north into Scotland and then south-west past Glasgow towards the Ayrshire coast. It is a long day either way, and it is one of the routes where a driver who knows the final stretch is worth having.
Starting in south Manchester means one detour worth making: away from the A34 Wilmslow Road, busy through Rusholme and Fallowfield all day, and onto Princess Parkway or the A6.
The hour you leave shows on the first motorway out. Traffic on the M61, the usual route from Manchester onto the M6 north, averaged 46.7 mph at 16:00 on a weekday over April to June 2026, against 53.2 mph at 05:00. The slowest hour is late afternoon, not the morning, which on a five hour drive is one more argument for the early start.
For an early flight the pre-dawn window helps more here than almost anywhere, because on a five hour drive an early clear start carries through the whole journey. Before five the M6 north is close to empty, and a margin is still kept for the unexpected.
This is the fact that makes this route different from every other Scottish airport comparison, and most pages leave it out entirely.
Prestwick International Airport railway station serves the terminal directly, with a footbridge from the platforms to the airport building. It is the only airport in Scotland with that arrangement. Glasgow Airport, by contrast, has no station at all and finishes with a bus. If your instinct is that Scottish airports are all awkward by rail, Prestwick is the exception.
The journey from Manchester is not direct, though. It runs north to Glasgow and then south again down the Ayrshire line.
The fastest scheduled journey takes 4 hours 22 minutes from Manchester Piccadilly with one change, at Glasgow Central, allowing at least ten minutes to make the connection. That is 48 minutes quicker than the drive in normal conditions, and it ends at a footbridge into the terminal rather than a bus stop. On a normal weekday in September 2026, seven departures from Piccadilly connect at Glasgow for Prestwick.
On the September 2026 timetable the first departure from Manchester Piccadilly that connects for Prestwick leaves at 04:57, and the earliest you can reach Prestwick International Airport station is 09:44. The last departure from Piccadilly that still makes the connection at Glasgow leaves at 17:21.
So the station at the terminal is only useful from mid-morning onwards. Prestwick’s schedule leans towards early low-cost departures, and none of the flights that leave before about eleven can be reached by rail from Manchester on the same day. For a lunchtime or afternoon flight the train is a strong answer. For the dawn departures the airport is known for, it is not an answer at all.
The cheapest way to get from Manchester to Prestwick Airport is rail for one person, and unusually for a Scottish airport there is no bus fare to add on top.
The rule underneath the prices is the part that holds. Rail charges for every seat, so two travellers pay twice and four pay four times over. A private transfer charges for the vehicle, so one passenger and four pay the same fixed price. On most routes the two costs cross somewhere between three and four passengers, sooner against walk-up tickets bought on the day and later against advance fares booked well ahead.
Because the rail journey ends at the terminal rather than at a bus stop, the crossover sits higher on this route than it does for Glasgow Airport. A pair travelling light may still be better off by train. Three or four with luggage will normally not be. You can check the fixed price for your own addresses and compare properly.

Rail times are the scheduled station-to-station journey plus 20 minutes to reach the station, 15 minutes on the platform before departure, 15 minutes per change, and 15 minutes from the arrival station to the address. The same allowance is used on every route on this site.
Door to door there is very little in it — about 17 minutes, with the car just ahead. There are only 7 direct trains a weekday, and the last train from Manchester Piccadilly leaves at 17:21.
For a solo traveller with a booked-ahead ticket and normal luggage, the train is the better answer, and the station at the terminal is the reason. There is no bus to find, no second ticket to buy and no shuttle timetable to work around.
It is better again given the road time. Five hours ten minutes is a long drive, and a rail journey with one change is a reasonable trade for it if you are not paying four fares.
And it is better for a last-minute trip, since a transfer needs 36 hours’ notice.
Early departures are the first case. Prestwick’s traffic skews towards early low-cost departures, and the earliest a train from Manchester reaches the airport station is 09:44. A fixed-price car does not keep railway hours.
Groups are the second. Two rail fares plus a change is one thing; four or more is another, and one vehicle covers everybody for a single fixed price.
Luggage is the third, and the change is what makes it bite. A footbridge at the destination does not help with getting cases between trains at the interchange.
The fourth is the shape of the rail route. Going north to Glasgow and then south again to the coast means the train covers noticeably more ground than the car does. A car heads for Ayrshire directly.
What the price covers, stated plainly. One price covers the vehicle and everyone in it, up to four passengers in a saloon and up to eight in the MPV Executive, set on the exact pickup-to-drop-off distance and confirmed before you travel rather than metered on the day. The driver is licensed, insured and DBS-checked and the vehicle is licensed, and payment is taken online by card when the booking is made.
On an arrival into Prestwick the flight is tracked to its actual landing time rather than the scheduled one, with the first hour after landing free and waiting charged after that, and meet and greet, if you add it, means the driver is inside the terminal. Cancellation terms are simple: a full refund at 24 hours or more before pickup, free amendments to date, time or address at the same threshold, and no refund inside 24 hours because the car and driver are already committed to you.
The Office of Rail and Road publishes punctuality and cancellations station by station rather than for a route, so this journey has three figures worth knowing. At Prestwick International Airport station, 90.7% of trains arrived within three minutes of schedule in period 4 of 2026-27, and 0.8% of trains scheduled to call there did not call. At Glasgow Central, where you change, the figures were 87.8% and 2.0%, and at Manchester Piccadilly 67.1% and 4.1%. Each counts every train at the station over the same four-week period.
Prestwick’s airport station has the best record of any station in these guides: fewer than one scheduled call in a hundred did not happen. The weakest of the three is the Manchester end.
The structural point is that the risk sits at the change rather than at either end. The final leg is a local service to a station attached to the terminal, which is a good position; the interchange is where a delay on the long leg turns into a missed connection. Leave the margin there.
Luggage. Travelling Manchester to Prestwick Airport with luggage by rail means one change, then a footbridge rather than a bus. Better than Glasgow, harder than a direct service.
Groups. Three or four is where the fixed vehicle fare starts to win, later than at Glasgow because there is no coach fare stacked on top.
Accessibility. A station at the terminal is a real advantage, though the interchange en route is still a change to plan for. A car removes both.
Notice. At least 36 hours ahead, please; on a five hour run that is what lets the vehicle and driver be planned properly.
The train for one person, and with no airport bus to add the advantage holds further up than it does for Glasgow. From three or four passengers the fixed car fare normally wins. Rail charges per seat while the car fare covers the vehicle, so the gap closes as the group grows.
About 5 hours 10 minutes for 219.5 miles. Slower per mile than the Glasgow Airport run at a similar distance, because the final stretch into Ayrshire is not motorway.
Yes, and it is the only airport in Scotland that does. Prestwick International Airport station sits beside the terminal with a footbridge connecting the two, so there is no bus or shuttle at the end of the journey.
Yes, despite covering more ground. The rail route goes north to Glasgow before coming back south, but the fastest scheduled journey still takes 4 hours 22 minutes from Manchester Piccadilly with one change, against about 5 hours 10 minutes by road.
The risk concentrates at the interchange rather than at either end, since a delay on the long leg can cost you the Ayrshire connection. At Prestwick International Airport station, 0.8% of trains scheduled to call did not call in period 4 of 2026-27, and at Glasgow Central 2.0%.
Yes, from Manchester Piccadilly to Glasgow Central and to Edinburgh Waverley: 7 direct trains a weekday to Glasgow and 8 to Edinburgh on the September 2026 timetable. Prestwick Airport itself needs a change at Glasgow Central.
One change with your cases, then a footbridge to the terminal rather than a bus. Easier than Glasgow Airport, harder than a direct service.
The car. The earliest a train from Manchester can reach Prestwick International Airport station is 09:44, which is too late for Prestwick’s early departures.
The vehicle classes and the booking form are on the airport transfers page. The rest of our destinations are on the transfers page, and the our car-against-train comparisons include Glasgow Airport, which makes the case for Prestwick’s station better than any argument here.
