Ambleside sits at the head of Windermere with no railway of its own, so after a flight the arrival that actually works is a car that meets you inside the terminal and drives the full 95 miles to your accommodation door. The run is about 2 hours 7 minutes in normal conditions, nearly all M6, then the A590 and A591 for the last stretch through Windermere. Your fixed fare covers the drive and the airport pickup fee; meet and greet and any extended waiting are shown separately on the quote, and once it is set the price does not move.
Ambleside is a walking and touring base, not a commuter town, so most people heading here from the airport are arriving with a week’s luggage, boots and waterproofs, sometimes a dog or a set of bikes, and the last thing that suits that is a rail change followed by a bus. There is no station at Ambleside. The nearest railhead is at Windermere, and from there it is still a bus or a local private hire transfer along the lake into town.
A Manchester Airport to Ambleside transfer with a fixed price closes that gap in one move: a single car from the terminal to the door of your hotel, cottage or campsite, a driver who has watched your flight in, and a fare that was agreed before you left home. It does not change if the M6 is slow past Preston, if junction 36 is queuing on a Friday, or if your flight lands two hours late. You can get an instant fixed quote on the booking form and hold that number for your travel date.
The comfort matters more than usual on this route because the journey is a long one after a flight. An executive car with room to stretch out, a boot that swallows the whole party’s luggage and a driver who knows the road means the two hours to the lake are rest rather than another leg of the trip. Because we ask for at least 36 hours’ notice, every booking has a named, licensed and insured driver assigned to it rather than a car found at the last minute, and that driver is tracking your inbound flight before you have collected your bags.
Families on a Lakes holiday. One fixed price for the whole car, child seats fitted if you ask when booking, and a door-to-door run with the cases, the travel cot and the walking kit in the boot rather than hauled across a station footbridge. The Estate Standard takes four large cases and a pushchair.
Groups sharing a house or a bunkhouse. Reunions, walking parties, a group heading for the Fairfield Horseshoe or the Langdale Pikes: split one MPV Executive between five and eight people and it usually lands close to the equivalent in train fares, with everyone and all the bags in one vehicle and one drop-off.
Couples on a short break. For two or three nights at a hotel on the Rothay or above the town, a quiet car straight from arrivals is time on the holiday rather than time spent working out connections while jet-lagged.
Business and event travellers. Conference guests for the hotels around Ambleside and Low Wood, or someone arriving for a wedding at one of the country-house venues nearby, tend to book Manchester Airport to Ambleside private hire for the certainty: a set arrival time, a car that can wait, and a driver who knows the venue approaches.
Older travellers. One calm door-to-door journey is far easier than a flight, a mainline train, a change and a branch line, especially arriving in the evening when the onward buses thin out.
Four vehicle classes cover this route, each with its own fixed fare below. The figure is the price for the car, not per person.
| Vehicle | Passengers | Luggage | Best for | From (one way) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Saloon Standard | 1-4 | 2 cases | Couples and solo travellers with light luggage | £199.00 |
| Estate Standard | 1-4 | 4 cases | Families with a full set of cases and walking gear | £208.50 |
| Executive Estate | 1-4 | 3 cases | Business travel with a higher-spec car | £228.00 |
| MPV Executive | 5-8 | 6 cases | Groups sharing a house or a lodge | £293.00 |
The first three tiers each seat up to four passengers; the MPV Executive covers five to eight and is the usual choice for a group arriving with a week’s luggage. If you are not sure which class fits your party and your bags, the fixed-fare calculator prices every option for your terminal and your Ambleside postcode.

The fixed price is set on the distance between your terminal and your Ambleside address and confirmed on your booking. There is no meter in the car, and the number does not change with traffic or with the time your flight actually lands.
Fixed price, no surprises: the quote shows the fare with meet and greet and any extra waiting as their own lines, and the airport’s pickup charge is already inside the fare rather than added at the end. A child seat or an extra pickup stop is quoted up front when you book, not sprung on you on the day.
Manchester Airport now runs two terminals, and Terminal 1 has closed. Terminal 2, the enlarged terminal, handles every airline except Ryanair, including easyJet, Jet2, TUI, Virgin Atlantic, Emirates, Qatar Airways, Etihad and Aer Lingus. Terminal 3 is the base for Ryanair. Your terminal is printed on your boarding pass, and it decides which forecourt your driver uses.
For a pre-booked transfer the driver waits in the licensed Private Hire Holding Area at JetParks 1, which costs £1.50 for up to 90 minutes, and comes to meet you once you are through arrivals, collecting you from the Express Pick Up zone at your terminal. Help with luggage and flight tracking are included, so an early or delayed landing is not a problem. Meet and greet is an optional extra: add it on the booking form and it is included in your quoted price.
If you are being dropped off for an outbound flight, the Terminal 2 and Terminal 3 forecourts charge from about £5.50 for five minutes up to £25 for thirty minutes. The Free Drop Off at JetParks 1 costs nothing, with a free 24-hour shuttle to the terminals taking around 6 minutes. Airport drop-off and pick-up charges change periodically, so treat these figures as indicative and check the airport’s own page for current rates: Manchester Airport pick-up and drop-off information. Your fixed transfer fare already covers the driver’s side of that.
The drive leaves the airport for the M56 and M6, then runs north on the M6 almost the whole way to junction 36. It is the A-road section after that, not the motorway, that decides the journey: the A590 and then the A591 through Windermere and on to Ambleside. Junction 36 and the A591 into Windermere both slow on busy weekends and in poor weather, and the last few miles along the lake are single carriageway with parked cars and pedestrians in the villages.
Friday afternoons and early Saturdays bring holiday traffic onto the roads out to the Lakes and the coast on top of the usual commuter peak. For a Friday or weekend arrival the pickup is planned around the conditions on the day rather than the quiet-midweek running time, so a landing that lines up with the getaway traffic is given extra room.
Ambleside itself is a tight one-way system around Market Cross and Compston Road, with hotels and guest houses spread up Rydal Road, Lake Road and the lanes above the town. The driver takes the approach that suits your address and gets as close to the door as the streets allow. For a cottage in Rydal, Clappersgate, Skelwith Bridge or the Langdale valley, give the exact address and any access notes when you book so the right vehicle is assigned and the driver knows the last mile.
The motorway part of this run behaves much the same all year. The A591 does not. In autumn and winter the road along Windermere and up towards Ambleside sees standing water after heavy rain, fallen leaves, low cloud on the higher ground and, a few times each winter, ice and snow on the exposed stretches. The pass road on beyond Ambleside towards Grasmere and Dunmail Raise is one of the first in the area to be affected.
None of that stops a transfer running, but it changes the timing. For a booking between late October and Easter the driver checks the forecast for the valley and the tops before setting off, allows extra minutes on the A591, and picks the safer line if the direct road is poor. In summer the constraint flips to volume: the villages between Windermere and Ambleside fill with parked cars and walkers, and a sunny Saturday afternoon is slower than a wet Tuesday. Either way the fixed fare is the same, because it was set on the distance, not the conditions.
The route works the same in reverse, and a transfer from Manchester Airport to Ambleside is booked the same way for the trip out as for the trip back. The one thing that needs thought on the return is an early flight. From Ambleside you are around two hours from the terminal before you add the check-in and bag-drop window, and the A591 plus junction 36 can both be slow in the morning, so a 7am departure usually means a pickup before 4am.
Give your flight number and terminal when you book the return and the pickup time is worked back from the check-in cut-off rather than guessed, with a sensible buffer for the roads. If that makes the start unreasonably early, a Manchester Airport hotel the night before with a short transfer in the morning is often the calmer option, and the driver will talk that through when you book. Booking both legs together means one arrangement with two fixed prices, each confirmed on screen.
The honest comparison, because it helps to see the options side by side. The figures below are broad estimates for comparison only and vary with your date, group size and exact address.
| Option | Rough cost (estimate) | Door-to-door time | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fixed private transfer | £199.00 to £293.00 for the car | About 2 hours 7 minutes plus any getaway-traffic delay | One price whoever travels; meets you in arrivals; door to door with the bags in the boot |
| Train, then bus or local private hire transfer | Cheapest for one person on an Advance single; more on the day, before the onward leg from Windermere | Change onto the branch line for Windermere, then a bus or private hire transfer the last few miles; longer than the drive once the connections are added | No station at Ambleside; best value travelling solo and light with a flexible arrival |
| Driving yourself | Not usually relevant on an inbound flight; on the return, fuel plus long-stay airport parking for the trip | Similar driving time | Airport parking booked ahead is the main cost to compare |
For one traveller with a small bag and time to spare, the train to Windermere and a bus on is the cheaper way in. For two or more people, for checked luggage and walking kit, or for a late or early flight, the fixed transfer normally wins on total cost and always on effort. When the value stacks up you can see your fare on the fixed-fare calculator and the exact figure is confirmed on screen.
Typically around 2 hours 7 minutes covering roughly 95 miles, depending on traffic and time of day. We build realistic timings into every booking rather than quoting a best-case figure.
Your fare is calculated by distance and confirmed before you travel, with no meter, no surge pricing and no hidden extras. Enter your pickup and drop-off on our booking form for an instant fixed quote.
We take bookings at least 36 hours before pickup, which is how we guarantee an executive vehicle and an assigned driver for every journey.
A family of four with luggage travels in one car, from £199.00 one way in a Saloon Standard, or £208.50 in the Estate Standard with room for four large cases and a pushchair. That is the total for the vehicle, with the airport pickup fee already inside it.
Not to Ambleside itself, which has no station. The nearest railway is at Windermere on the branch line, reached with a change, and from there it is a bus or a local private hire transfer along the lake. A Manchester Airport to Ambleside transfer runs straight to the door with no change.
Terminal 2 or Terminal 3, whichever is on your boarding pass. Terminal 1 has closed. Terminal 2 now handles every airline except Ryanair, and Terminal 3 is used by Ryanair only. Give your flight number when booking and the driver works out the rest.
Inside the terminal. The driver waits in the licensed Private Hire Holding Area at JetParks 1, then meets you after arrivals and walks you to the car in the Express Pick Up zone at your terminal, helping with the bags. It is a meet and greet, not a kerbside pickup.
Nothing changes for you. Every airport pickup is flight-tracked, so the driver sees the new landing time and adjusts the collection. The fixed fare does not go up because the flight was late.
Yes. The fare covers the address wherever it is, including the villages nearby such as Rydal, Clappersgate, Skelwith Bridge and the Langdale valley. For a property up a narrow lane the driver gets as close as the vehicle safely can and helps from there. Give the exact address and any access notes at booking.
Yes. The trip works the same in reverse, priced on the same fixed basis, with the pickup worked back from your check-in time and extra time allowed for junction 36 and the A591 on a busy morning.
The Saloon Standard takes two cases, the Executive Estate three, the Estate Standard four and the MPV Executive six alongside passengers. Tell us the bag count, plus any bikes, golf clubs or a dog, when booking so the class fits.
Per car. The fare in the table is the total for the vehicle, so four people in a Saloon Standard pay the same as one.
Yes. Booking and payment are completed online when you confirm, so there is nothing to settle with the driver on the day.
For every route we run into the fells, see the Lake District Transfers hub or the main Transfers index.
Enter your terminal and your Ambleside postcode on the fixed-fare calculator to see the price for each vehicle class. The fare shown is the fare you pay, the airport pickup fee and flight tracking are already in it, and it is held from the moment you book.
